What is on the GTA 5 cover: every panel explained
The GTA 5 cover is nine panels of Los Santos in one flat noon light, and every person in it is performing for a lens: the bikini selfie with the phone up and the peace sign out, the rottweiler mid bark, the balaclava and the rifle held like a prop, plus traffic, aircraft and beach. It is Rockstar's Los Angeles satire compressed into a box, and the geometry holding it together is stranger than it looks.
- Panels
- Nine. Eight four cornered, one six cornered.
- Tilt
- Every panel is off axis, by up to about eight degrees.
- Gutters
- Gaps between the panels, 20 to 30 base pixels, deliberately uneven.
- Outer border
- None drawn. There is an 18 pixel margin and no stroke.
- Build your own

What is the GTA 5 cover actually about?
GTA V is Rockstar's Los Angeles at its most satirical, and the cover is the joke in miniature: everyone in it is playing to a lens. The panel that ended up on a million thumbnails is the bikini selfie in the top row. The rest carries the same gag from different angles, the dog mid bark, the mask and the weapon, the traffic, the aircraft, the beach.
One flat noon light runs through all of it. That is the single most important thing to notice if you plan to rebuild the cover, because it makes this the least forgiving grid on this site for a mixed photo set. Nine pictures shot at nine different times of day will not settle no matter how well each one is cropped.
How is the GTA V grid laid out?
Three shallow panels across the top, two tall ones down the left edge, one very large tile through the middle right, and three of assorted size along the bottom. Panel 5 is the only one that is not a quad: it has six corners, wrapping around panel 6 so that the bottom middle of the cover fits underneath it. It is also where the GTA V wordmark lands.
Are the GTA V panels really rectangles?
No, and this is the detail almost every rebuild gets wrong. The V grid looks square and is not. Each panel is pulled off axis, by up to about eight degrees, which is exactly enough to stop the collage reading as a spreadsheet without ever announcing itself. The bottom edge of panel 3 falls 23 pixels as it runs from right to left. The inner edge of panel 4 leans in by 12 pixels over its height. Straighten any of it and the cover immediately looks like a template.
Why are the gaps between panels uneven?
Because they are gaps rather than lines. On this grid the gutters are not a painted stroke: they are the space left between the traced outlines, they run between 20 and 30 base pixels, and their unevenness is copied from the real cover rather than introduced by the trace. Near the top the gaps measure about 23 to 25 pixels. Further down they widen.
That has a practical consequence in the editor. With no stroke and no drawn border, the Inner colour repaints every gutter and the 18 pixel margin around the outside all at once, and the Outer colour has nothing left to touch. On the GTA VI grid, where the tiles abut and the line is a real stroke, the two controls do different jobs.
How do you make your own GTA 5 cover?
Open the GTA 5 cover maker, click each panel to drop in a photo, drag and zoom inside the panel to frame it, set the frame colour, then download. It exports at 1666 by 1920 pixels as PNG, JPEG or WebP, with no watermark and no account. Everything is drawn in your browser, so no photo is uploaded anywhere. The step by step walkthrough covers the same process in more detail on the VI grid.
Which photos suit this grid?
- Pick one hour and stay in it. Warm midday light is the glue holding the original together. A single evening frame among eight bright ones reads as a mistake, not as contrast.
- Crop tighter than feels right. Near rectangular panels give a small subject nowhere to hide. Fill each tile edge to edge and let the wide gutters do the separating.
- Keep panel 5 simple. It is the widest tile and the wordmark lands across it. A busy photo there fights the logo, a clean one holds it up.
- Chrome and sunshine. Cars, bikes, beaches and skylines all read as Los Santos without any editing.
GTA 5 cover FAQ
How many panels are on the GTA 5 cover?
Nine. Eight are simple four cornered quads and one has six corners, wrapping the middle right of the cover with the wordmark across it.
Are the GTA V cover panels straight rectangles?
No. Every panel is pulled off axis, by up to about eight degrees. It is enough to stop the collage reading as a spreadsheet without ever announcing itself.
How wide are the gaps between the GTA V panels?
Between 20 and 30 base pixels, and deliberately uneven, because the gaps on the real cover are uneven. They are gaps between traced outlines rather than a painted stroke.
Why does the Outer colour do nothing on the GTA V grid?
Because GTA V has no stroke and no drawn border. The Inner colour repaints every gutter and the 18 pixel margin at once, so Outer has nothing left to touch.
What resolution does a GTA 5 cover export at?
1666 by 1920 pixels, twice the 833 by 960 base canvas, as PNG, JPEG or WebP, with no watermark.
Is the GTA 5 cover maker free?
Yes. It is free with no account and no paid tier, and your photos are drawn in your own browser rather than uploaded.
