What is on the GTA 6 cover: the nine panel grid explained

Design · Updated 21 July 2026 · About 5 min read

The GTA 6 cover is nine angled panels of Leonida, arranged so that one six cornered tile in the middle carries more than a quarter of the artwork on its own. Lucia and Jason sit in that middle tile, surrounded by Florida snapshots: strip signage, wet asphalt, boat wake, swamp light, a beach crowd. Here is how the grid is actually built, measured off the box art rather than eyeballed.

Panels
Nine. Eight four cornered, one six cornered.
Largest panel
The six cornered tile, better than a quarter of the total area.
Gutters
14 base pixels, inside a 22 base pixel outer border.
Frame colour
#180024, a deep aubergine, not black.
Straight edges
Only the outside edge of the cover. Every internal divider is angled.

How is the GTA VI grid laid out?

Nine panels fill an 833 by 960 canvas. They vary enormously in size, which is the first reason the collage never reads as a table of thumbnails: one huge tile anchors the middle, three shallow tiles run across the top, and the rest fill the bottom and the left edge at four different scales.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
The GTA VI grid, drawn from the same polygon coordinates the cover maker renders. Panel 1 is the six cornered hero tile. Panels 5, 6 and 9 are the top row, and the line under them dips and then climbs rather than running flat.

Why does one panel have six corners?

Panel 1 comes in from the right edge, crosses the middle of the cover and then steps down, so that panel 3 in the bottom right corner wedges underneath it. That step is what makes it six sided instead of four. At better than a quarter of the total area it is the largest single tile in any of the five Grand Theft Auto grids, and its top edge is not level either: it climbs 74 pixels from left to right across the run.

That climb matters when you fill it. Anything you place high in the panel gets trimmed on a slope rather than cut straight, so a head near the top edge loses its crown on one side only, which looks like a mistake rather than a crop.

Is anything on the GTA VI cover actually straight?

Only the outside edge. The divider under the top row is not one line at all: it starts 231 pixels down at the left edge, sinks to 272 about a third of the way across, then climbs back to 192 at the right. The top row is a shallow V rather than a band. The two vertical dividers inside it splay apart, one leaning left by roughly 2 degrees and the next right by roughly 5.

That is the whole trick. A grid that is almost aligned but never quite reads as a wall of snapshots someone pinned up, not as a layout someone set. Push those angles to zero and the cover turns into a contact sheet.

What holds the panels apart?

A 14 base pixel gutter between tiles, inside a 22 base pixel outer border, both measured off the printed art. The colour is the detail most people miss: it is mixed at #180024, a deep aubergine, where every other Grand Theft Auto cover sits on near neutral black. Set against pink and orange photographs it reads violet, and that is a large part of why the collage feels like night in Leonida rather than night anywhere else.

How do you compose a balanced version?

The GTA 6 cover maker traces all of this one to one from the real cover, so you get the geometry for free and only have to supply the photographs and the framing. If you want the walkthrough instead of the anatomy, the step by step guide covers it in five steps.

When does GTA 6 come out?

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on 19 November 2026. The box art the grid here is traced from has already been published, so nothing on this page is waiting on launch.

GTA 6 cover grid FAQ

How many panels are on the GTA 6 cover?

Nine. Eight of them have four corners and one has six, and that six sided panel covers more than a quarter of the whole cover.

Are the GTA VI cover panels rectangles?

No. Only the outside edge of the cover is straight. Every internal divider runs at an angle, and the two verticals in the top row splay apart, one leaning left about 2 degrees and the next right about 5.

How thick are the lines between the GTA VI panels?

The gutters measure 14 base pixels and the outer border 22, read off the box art. On the exported 1666 by 1920 cover both are doubled.

What colour is the GTA VI cover frame?

A deep aubergine, mixed at #180024, rather than the near neutral black used on the other four Grand Theft Auto covers. Against pink and orange photographs it reads violet.

Can I build the GTA VI grid with my own photos?

Yes. The GTA 6 cover maker traces the same nine panels one to one from the box art, fills them with your photos in the browser, and exports at 1666 by 1920 pixels for free.
